The Wyndham Championship Media Center Named After Irwin Smallwood

Irwin SmallwoodIrwin Smallwood is a retired former golf writer, sports editor and managing editor of the Greensboro News & Record and the old Greensboro Daily News where he worked for more than four decades. The Wyndham Championship Media Center was named in his honor in 2004. Smallwood pioneered golf writing in the North Carolina. He didn't limit himself to PGA TOUR stops; he showed enthusiasm for covering junior tournaments, city amateurs, state amateurs and other events.

His diligence and writing flair won the Greensboro native three National Golf Writers Association awards and numerous other honors; he co-founded the Carolina's Golf Writer's Association. He spent 18 years on the news side of the business, but five years before retiring in 1989, he returned to sports as executive sports editor. He still had the writer's touch, winning a N.C. Press Association Award.

Smallwood has observed the Piedmont Triad’s PGA TOUR event since the late 1940s. In 1999 he was named Honorary Chairman of the Wyndham Championship. Many share Smallwood’s love for the Piedmont Triad’s PGA TOUR event, but few, if any, have his passion for the event.
