GREENSBORO, N.C. – What’s new at the 73rd annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 13-19, 2012? Some pre-tournament notes focusing on new fan amenities are below:
The Boardwalk: The Wyndham Boardwalk presented by Sunbrella® is a general public hospitality hub that evokes the feel of a seaside vacation. Designed to look and feel like a beachside boardwalk, the Wyndham Boardwalk features live entertainment, fun concession carts, photo booths, a face painter, a Wyndham Championship merchandise kiosk and a bar as well as indoor and outdoor seating provided by Sunbrella®. (Food & beverage are available for purchase) All elements are housed under an open-air 60’ x 82’ tent. The Wyndham boardwalk will feature live music Tuesday through Sunday afternoons after tournament play has cleared the first hole across the street, and radio networks will broadcast live shows from the Boardwalk. The Wyndham Boardwalk presented by Sunbrella® is located in the new Sedgefield Clubhouse parking lot, adjacent to the Key to Wyn expo tent near the main entrance, and it is open to all ticket and credential holders.
Tropical Wear Contest: Fans attending the Wyndham Championship next week will have a chance to win a vacation from Wyndham – the only catch is they’ll have to dress in their best tropical wear to win the inaugural Wyndham Championship Tropical Wear Contest to earn a vacation.
On Saturday, Aug. 18 during the third round of the Wyndham, Piedmont Triad golf fans should come to Sedgefield in their most creative tropical outfit. Tropical wear such as beach hats, sandals, Hawaiian shirts, shorts, skirts, grass skirts, sarongs, cover-ups, scuba gear, etc. are examples of acceptable contest attire. Thong bikinis and other clothing that is not widely considered family friendly will not be eligible for the contest.
Wyndham Championship officials will be on the course Saturday looking for the best, most creative tropical outfits, and those fans whose outfits warrant tournament staff to take a picture will be invited to the Wyndham Boardwalk adjacent to the Sedgefield Clubhouse at 4 p.m. to compete for the first-place prize. Tropical wear-clad fans can also participate in the contest by simply showing up at the Boardwalk prior to judging on Saturday to be a part of the official contest. Wyndham executives and WKRR – Rock 92 morning show hosts Chris Kelly and Biggie in addition to 107.5 WKZL morning show hosts Katie and Jared will serve as the contest judges.
First place will receive a seven-night Wyndham stay from Resort Condominiums International and be offered the opportunity to be featured in the 2013 Wyndham Championship marketing campaign. Second place will receive a four-day, three-night Wyndham stay compliments of Wyndham Vacation Ownership, and third place will receive a two-night stay at the Wyndham Bonnet Creek Resort in Orlando compliments of Wyndham Hotel Group. In addition, access to the Wyndham beach viewing platform across the lake from the 15th green at Sedgefield will be randomly distributed to people that are dressed for the contest. Everyone who participates in the contest judging will receive a small prize.
South Public Parking Lot: Also new in 2012 is the Wyndham Championship South Public Parking Lot at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) located on High Point Road south of the intersection with Guilford College Road. Designed for Wyndham fans living in Jamestown, High Point, Lexington, Thomasville and other points south, the new south public parking lot will be much more convenient for golf fans in the southern Piedmont and beyond. Like the Greensboro Coliseum public parking, the South lot is open Thursday through Sunday with a cost of $7 per car. The tournament also offers Premier Public Parking at American Furniture Warehouse Thursday through Sunday where the cost is $10 per car on a first come, first served basis. Monday through Wednesday, all parking is at the premier location at the intersection of High Point Road and Merritt Drive.
New Kids Zone Location: The Wyndham is a very popular late summer venue for kids throughout the Piedmont Triad, but few can watch golf all day so the Wyndham is happy to provide the Sunbrella® Kids Zone again this year. The Wyndham Boardwalk presented by Sunbrella® is now in the former Kids Zone location. The Sunbrella® Kids Zone has moved to the intersection of Wayne Road and Forsyth Drive, adjacent to the shuttle bus drop-off point at the tournament’s main entrance. The Sunbrella® Kids Zone will have inflatable slides and a limited concession stand. And the best news? The new location is almost completely shaded offering a perfect break from the late-August heat.
Contested annually on the Donald Ross-designed course at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., the Wyndham Championship was founded in 1938 and is the seventh-oldest event on the PGA TOUR.
