GREENSBORO, N.C. – University of North Carolina men’s basketball coach Roy Williams, Golf Channel’s Holly Sonders, NBA Star Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors, NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick, former NBA star Dell Curry, Anna Rawson and Bubba Cunningham will be among the amateur golfers playing in next week’s Wyndham Championship pro-ams, it was announced today. The 73rd annual Wyndham Championship begins Monday.
Both Currys, Rawson and NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Harvick will play in Monday’s Kevin Harvick Foundation Pro-Am presented by Technology Concepts & Design, Inc. Steph Curry played three seasons for the Davidson Wildcats and led the nation in scoring with 28.6 points per game in the 2008-09 NCAA men’s basketball season. He entered the NBA draft following his junior year and was selected by the Golden State Warriors as the seventh overall pick. Last season, Curry averaged 14.7 points, 5.3 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game. He is an alumnus of Charlotte Christian School.
Stephen Curry’s father, Dell, retired from the NBA in 2002 after a 16-year career during which he played 11 seasons for the former Charlotte Hornets. He served as an assistant coach for the Charlotte Bobcats in 2007 and is an alumnus of Virginia Tech University where is a member of the Hall of Fame.
Former LPGA player Anna Rawson returns to the Wyndham Championship this year to participate in both pro-ams. Rawson grew up in Adelaide, South Australia and has a career in both golf and modeling. She played college golf at the University of Southern California and helped the Trojans win the 2003 NCAA National Championship before turning professional. Rawson also models for corporate campaigns, high-end brands and fashion magazines.
Among the PGA TOUR golfers playing in the Kevin Harvick Foundation Pro-Am will be two-time major championship winner John Daly, former world No. 1 golfer David Duval and Boo Weekley. Kevin Harvick Foundation Pro-Am tee times begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, and Harvick’s group will tee off on hole No. 1 at 10 a.m.
In addition to these multi-sport luminaries, three junior golfers representing The First Tee of the Triad will also play in the Kevin Harvick Foundation Pro-Am. Presenting sponsor Technology Concepts & Design, Inc. donated one of its groups to The First Tee of the Triad, and three Piedmont Triad junior golfers will play in Monday’s event. Anthony Atkins, 17, from Whitsett just east of Greensboro, has been a part of the First Tee of the Triad program since 2008; he is home schooled. Seth Lomison, 15, from Pfafftown just north of Winston-Salem, is also home schooled and joined the program in 2008. Mathew Gao, 13, from Clemmons, N.C. is a rising eighth grader at Hanes Middle School and is on the A honor roll. These three players representing The First Tee of the Triad will enjoy a round of golf with a PGA TOUR professional thanks to the generosity of TCDI.
Williams, Sonders, Cunningham, Harvick and Rawson will play in Wednesday’s New Breed Logistics Pro-Am. Sonders is the extremely popular co-host of Golf Channel’s Morning Drive. After joining the Golf Channel in January of last year, she began providing tournament updates before moving into the Morning Drive co-host position. She played college golf at Michigan State University.
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be well represented on Wednesday with Williams and director of athletics Bubba Cunningham who has been at the University since October of last year. After hosting the Kevin Harvick Foundation Pro-Am on Monday, Harvick will also play in the New Breed Logistics pro-am on Wednesday along with Rawson.
