GREENSBORO, N.C. – Former world No. 1 Luke Donald and rising PGA TOUR star Harris English will play the Piedmont Triad’s PGA TOUR event, the tournament announced today. The 76th annual Wyndham Championship starts Monday at Sedgefield Country Club.
These players join World Golf Hall of Famer Ernie Els, reigning FedExCup champion Billy Horschel, 2007 champion Brandt Snedeker, 2011 champion Webb Simpson, 2011 FedExCup champion Bill Haas, Hideki Matsuyama, Major winners Jason Dufner and Retief Goosen, Paul Casey, reigning champion Camilo Villegas, two-time champion Davis Love III, 2008 winner Carl Pettersson, Brooks Koepka, 2005 champion K.J. Choi and 2010 winner Arjun Atwal in the field. “Young Guns” Justin Thomas, Ollie Schniederjans, Daniel Berger, Chesson Hadley, Patrick Rodgers and Cameron Smith are also in the field.
Donald, a former No. 1 player in the world, is a five-time PGA TOUR winner with eight international wins also to his credit. In 2011, he became the first player from England to be named PGA TOUR Player of the Year since the award’s inception in 1990. He finished that season ranked No. 1 on the money list for both the PGA TOUR and the European Tour. He has represented the European Team in Ryder Cup competition four times. He tied for seventh at both the Honda Classic and the Travelers Championship earlier this season – his best finishes this year. He will make his fourth Wyndham Championship appearance and his first since 2004. Donald is 131st in the current FedExCup point standings and 64th in the Official World Golf Rankings.
English, 26, is making his second Wyndham Championship appearance; he finished tied for 10th in 2012. He is a two-time PGA TOUR winner with three top-10 finishes this season: tied for second at the Farmers Insurance Open, tied for third at the Sony Open and tied for 10th at the Valspar Championship. He was a four-time All-American and four-time all-Southeastern Conference player while attending the University of Georgia. He won the Georgia State Amateur tournament at age 18 and represented the United States on the 2011 Walker Cup team. English is 46th in the current FedExCup point standings and 85th in the Official World Golf Rankings.
