Backpack Programs
One out of five children in North Carolina is food insecure, and North Carolina has the 10th-highest childhood food insecurity in the United States. The Wyndham Championship’s Birdies Fore Backpacks program works with local organizations to provide backpacks full of nutritious food for children in need when school is not in session. Since the program’s inception in 2014, the tournament is proud to have provided more than 910,000 nutritious meals for thousands of Piedmont Triad families. The First Tee – Central Carolina:
The Wyndham Championship is a major supporter of First Tee – Central Carolina, the local chapter of the international initiative founded by the PGA TOUR that enables kids to build the strength of character that empowers them through a lifetime of new challenges. Using golf and life skills as its tools, First Tee provides kids opportunities they may never have otherwise; opportunities for mentoring, enhancing their education and career choices and to learn a game that strengthens character, draws out leadership and builds confidence.
First Tee – Central Carolina hosts a free youth golf clinic during Wyndham Championship tournament week; the clinic, hosted for the first time in 2023 at historic Gillespie Golf Course near downtown Greensboro, is open to junior golfers ages 5-18, and PGA TOUR professionals help provide instruction. First Tee – Central Carolina is active year-round throughout the Piedmont Triad region, and is specifically focused on serving the East Greensboro and East Winston-Salem communities around Gillespie and Winston Lake golf courses. The chapter positively impacts more than 1,000 participants annually through after-school programs and partners with some 140 local elementary schools, teaching golf and character values in physical education classes.
