GREENSBORO, N.C. – 2010 FedExCup champion Jim Furyk will play in the 2011 Wyndham Championship, it was announced today. The 72nd annual Wyndham Championship presented by BB&T is set for Aug, 15-21 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
Furyk joins a field that already includes world No. 16 Paul Casey, world No. 17 Ian Poulter, world No. 18 Kyung-Tae Kim, world No. 19 David Toms, 2009 U.S. Open champion Lucas Glover, Webb Simpson, Bill Haas, Camilo Villegas, Trevor Immelman, 2008 champion Carl Pettersson, three-time major winner Vijay Singh, two-time major winner Angel Cabrera, 2007 champion Brandt Snedeker, 1997 British Open winner Justin Leonard, Louis Oosthuizen, Anthony Kim, two-time Wyndham winners Rocco Mediate and Davis Love III, Boo Weekley, John Daly, Tommy “two gloves” Gainey and defending champion Arjun Atwal.
Furyk enjoyed a spectacular season last year. When he won the TOUR Championship and clinched the FedExCup title, he joined previous FedExCup winners Tiger Woods (2007, ’09) and Vijay Singh(2008). He was named the 2010 PGA TOUR player of the year. With Furyk and Singh in the field, the Wyndham now boasts two of the three previous champions of the FedExCup.
Furyk is 25th in the official world golf rankings and 73rd in the current FedExCup point standings. He has two top-10 finishes among his 13 made cuts in 20 events this season. This year’s appearance will be Furyk’s 12th Wyndham Championship. He played 11 consecutive years from 1994 through 2004. His best finish came in 1999 when he finished in second place.
“Adding Jim Furyk is a powerful addition to a very strong field,” Wyndham Championship tournament director Mark Brazil said. “In my 10 years, this is by far the best field we’ve had here. The Wyndham will be a treat for Piedmont Triad golf fans. There’s no doubt, we’ll have some for the biggest names in golf here, and I can’t wait for the competition to get started next week.”
Players have until 5 p.m. today or 30 minutes after they complete second-round play in the PGA Championship to commit to the Wyndham field. In addition, they may withdraw from the field any time prior to the commitment deadline or after the PGA Championship if they feel their performance in the season’s final major changed their FedExCup standing.
Contested annually on the Donald Ross-designed course at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., the Wyndham Championship was founded in 1938 and is the seventh oldest event on the PGA TOUR.
