GREENSBORO, N.C. – Jimmy Walker, who won the PGA Championship on July 31, will play the 2016 Wyndham Championship, his first event since winning the season’s final Major championship, the tournament announced today. The 77th annual Wyndham Championship is set for Aug. 15-21, 2016 at Sedgefield Country Club.
Walker joins former Wyndham winner Brandt Snedeker, Wake Forest alumnus Bill Haas, U.S. Open champions Webb Simpson, Retief Goosen, Graeme McDowell, Jim Furyk, Angel Cabrera and Lucas Glover, PGA Championship winners Jason Dufner and David Toms, Justin Thomas, Hideki Matsuyama, Kevin Kisner, Kevin Na, William McGirt, World Golf Hall of Famer Vijay Singh, Open Championship winners Justin Leonard and Stewart Cink, former Wyndham winners Ryan Moore, Carl Pettersson, Camilo Villegas and Arjun Atwal, Scott Piercy, Harris English as well as Spanish stars Rafael Cabrera Bello and Jon Rahm in the field.
Walker’s win in the PGA Championship was his sixth PGA TOUR victory; it moved him from 29th all the way to fourth in Ryder Cup points putting him in excellent position to remain among the top eight in points and be an automatic qualifier. Should he make this year’s team, it would be his second-consecutive Ryder Cup appearance. The eight automatic Ryder Cup qualifiers will be announced Monday, Aug. 29, the day after the first of four FedExCup Playoffs events, The Barclays. The Wyndham Championship is the second-to-last chance for golfers to earn Ryder Cup points.
In addition to his PGA Championship win, Walker finished tied for fourth at the Farmers Insurance Open, tied for sixth at the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship and tied for 10th at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii earlier this season. Walker is currently 15th in the FedExCup point standings and 17th in the Official World Golf Rankings.
