Lee Owens was born in Shelby, N.C., and lived in Colorado before moving to Greensboro 45 years ago. He is returning for his 25th year as a volunteer! We asked him why he decided to volunteer, and he said, “I love golf; I’m a golfer. It was also a chance to give back to charity in a way I could not do alone.”
We asked Owens why he remained dedicated to the tournament and volunteering, and he told us, “For one thing, it is like a family who gets together for a couple of weeks. We all know each other well. It is for the camaraderie and the charitable aspect of it.”
As for his favorite Wyndham moment, he struggled to pick just one, so he gave us two! “There have been a lot of favorite moments, but the first one I felt close to was when Webb Simpson won his first tournament here. He was a local guy who went to school at Wake Forest on the Arnold Palmer Scholarship. Arnold was my idol, and it brings back a lot of memories.”
Speaking of Arnie… “The first time we had the tournament here at Sedgefield, Arnold Palmer and Richard Petty were the honorary starters,” Palmer shared. “It was funny; Richard put his hat on, and he and Arnold switched hats. Arnie wore Richard’s hat, and Richard wore Arnie’s visor. That was a really good memory because I got to meet Arnie.”
Lee, thank you for all your hard work and time dedicated to the Wyndham Championship. We appreciate you!
